Letting ceramic coatings cure: when rain and the first wash are okay

Final PRO Keramikversiegelung von Safe-Shield in einer braunen Glasflasche

Our Final PRO Ceramic Coating is water-resistant and ready to drive after about 12 hours at around 20 °C. It is fully cured after 5 days; only then may the vehicle be washed. Times may vary depending on climatic conditions.

These details apply specifically to Final PRO. Other ceramic coatings may have different requirements. We explain how to plan the curing time after application, what to watch out for in the rain and how the first wash should be done.

Final PRO at approx. 20 °C:

  • First 12 hours: leave to stand dry and protected.
  • After about 12 hours: water-resistant and ready to drive; do not wash yet.
  • After 5 days: fully cured and washable again.

Water-resistant does not mean that curing is fully complete! Plan the waiting time from the end of the coating application so that even the last panel you worked on has enough time.

How do you let Final PRO cure properly?

Plan the protected curing time before you start coating. For application you need a well-ventilated, well-lit, dry and clean work area. The application temperature should be between +15 and +25 °C. Hot surfaces and direct sunlight are an absolute no-go.

The drying times in our instructions refer to around 20 °C (68 °F). Under different conditions they cannot be transferred to the minute. Especially in a cold garage you should not simply assume that the same waiting time is sufficient. If you cannot create suitable conditions, clarify the process with us or your detailer before application.

Keep the vehicle protected from rain, dew and spray during the initial phase. “It’s not raining” does not automatically mean “the paint stays dry” outdoors: dew can also bring moisture onto the surface. A clean, dry and well-ventilated garage is therefore easier to manage than an uncovered parking spot.

The coating is no reason to seal the room airtight. Follow the ventilation and safety instructions in the manual, keep ignition sources away and use the prescribed protective equipment. Don’t try to speed up curing on your own with hot air or any non-approved heat method.

When can a ceramic-coated car go back out in the rain?

For our Final PRO ceramic coating, at around 20 °C the specification is water-resistant and ready to drive after 12 hours. That is the relevant point for normal water contact and returning to the road. It is not a green light for shampoo, pressure washing or an automatic car wash: for that, wait until full curing after 5 days.

Even after water resistance has been achieved, drying droplets can leave residues behind. If possible, keep the vehicle sheltered for longer if you don’t need it. Do not deliberately test the beading with a garden hose in the first few days.

What if it rains before the 12 hours are up?

If possible, move the vehicle under a dry roof. Don’t rub the fresh coating frantically dry and don’t use cleaners or detailers. Contact us or the detailer who applied the coating, providing the time of application, temperature and details of the water contact. Whether rework is necessary depends on the condition; “definitely ruined” would be just as wrong as a blanket all-clear.

What about bird droppings or heavy dirt in the first 5 days?

You should not leave heavy, localized contamination such as bird droppings on the paint for several days. Our Final PRO instructions recommend carefully removing such contamination with a gentle stream of water or a very soft microfiber towel, working carefully and without pressure.

Keep contact as minimal as possible: gently loosen and rinse off the specific residue with water. If a cloth is necessary, use a very soft, clean, damp cloth, without pressure and without dry rubbing. Do not spread the dirt over adjacent areas.

This targeted removal is an exception for problematic contamination, not a complete car wash. During the curing phase, do not use acidic water spot removers, strong alkaline cleaners or polish on your own initiative. If conspicuous areas remain, we’ll work with you to determine the next steps.

How should you wash the car for the first time after curing?

After 5 days under the conditions described, you can maintain Final PRO as normal. You do not automatically need a special intensive cleaner for this first wash. A thorough and gentle hand wash is a sensible way to start.

  1. Prepare cool paintwork: Work in the shade and rinse off loose dirt thoroughly before the wash mitt touches the paint.
  2. Wash with a suitable shampoo: For regular hand washing, our Wash & Foam car shampoo is ideal. Follow the recommended dilution and use clean wash tools.
  3. Rinse off all residue: Don’t let shampoo dry on the surface. Rinse thoroughly around mirrors and trim as well.
  4. Gentle drying: Soak up water with a clean, absorbent towel. You can use our 1600 GSM drying towel for this. Work without additional pressure and check for drips from gaps and crevices.

For the full technique, see Car wash: pH-neutral, acidic or alkaline?. Acidic shampoos can later be useful for mineral deposits, suitable alkaline cleaners for certain stubborn traffic films. What matters are the actual residue and suitability for the coating. They are not automatically part of the first wash.

If you still notice edges after curing, our guide on removing water spots from ceramic coatings will help. If the water behaviour has changed, Ceramic coating no longer beads explains the correct order of cleaning and assessment.

Removal after minutes, curing after days: What’s the difference?

The short time between application and wipe-off is not the curing time. With Final PRO, you remove the excess roughly 3 minutes after application using a soft 300 GSM microfiber cloth without pressure. Start with small sections of about 60 × 60 cm to keep the process under control.

Inspect the paint directly from different angles. Visible excess, known as high spots, can be removed according to the instructions by lightly wiping for up to 10 minutes after application. That is not a reason to delay normal wipe-off for that long. Once cured, you should not assume that such spots can still be easily wiped away.

Final PRO is a one-layer ceramic coating. Additional layers or spontaneous maintenance products are not required to meet the specified curing time. As part of the preparation, a compatibility test in an inconspicuous area is mandatory before application. The detailed product instructions remain decisive for the entire process.

When planning your application, you’ll find the coating and accessories in the Final PRO Ceramic Coating Kit and an overview in our Ceramic Coating category. Which preparation your paint needs is explained in Polish before ceramic coating.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash after just 12 hours?

No. For Final PRO, around 12 hours at approx. 20 °C means water-resistant and ready to drive. Washing only after full curing, which is after 5 days under the conditions mentioned.

Do the 5 days apply to every ceramic coating?

No. The time given here applies to Final PRO at around 20 °C. For other products, their respective instructions are decisive; climate can also influence the times.

Can Final PRO cure outdoors?

The decisive factor is dry, sheltered conditions, especially during the first 12 hours. Outdoors, rain, dew and dirt can interfere with curing. Plan a suitable sheltered parking spot instead of relying solely on a rain-free forecast.

May I remove bird droppings during curing?

Yes. Such heavy contamination is carefully removed with a gentle stream of water or a very soft microfiber cloth. Do not rub dry and do not turn this into a full wash.

Does another layer help it cure faster?

No. Final PRO is designed to be used in a single layer. An additional layer does not replace or shorten the specified drying time.
